Barbadians will get a further glimpse into the life and work of one
of this country’s literary giants, Frank Appleton Collymore.
The
Frank Collymore Literary Endowment will launch “Remembering the
Sea”, a book in honour of the late teacher, writer, artist and
poet, on Saturday, October 16, 2004.
Dr. Philip Nanton, Professor, Liberal Arts Department, St. Georges
University, edited the book, a scholarly reflection on Collymore
the man, his work and his rise to literary acclaim. .
Andy Taitt, Chairman of the Endowment, says that the Committee was
pleased to have completed this work on “Colly”, the literary icon
about whom
younger Barbadians, in particular, know so little.
“We did not intend for “Remembering the Sea” to be a
definitive book that subsequent writers would only embellish. If in
years to come scholars feel that any study of Frank Collymore properly
begins with “Remembering the Sea”, we would have accomplished
a task worthy of Colly,” the Endowment Chairman states in the book’s
foreword.
The Central Bank of Barbados, sponsor of the Endowment, commissioned and
provided the financial support for the 168-page publication, which is
intended for all students and lovers of Caribbean literature. “Remembering
the Sea” will be available in all bookstores from Monday, October
18, 2004.
The Frank Collymore Literary Endowment administers an annual literary
competition in memory of the Barbadian man of letters for whom the Frank
Collymore Hall was named in 1986. Frank Collymore died in 1980 at 87.
